If you were to buy a used car in one to two years. Which one would it be. And let’s say for the purposes of this poll, the BMW and Porsche are Carmax’d. All similar price ranges, though I suspect that the BMW will be a little cheaper.

GTR will dominate on performance

911 will offer the most sports car-like feel (I’m assuming you’re looking at a 997?)

M3 will be the most practical. It’s the only one with usable rear seats. The E92 is a true coupe and not a 2+2. It’s also got the most trunk space and probably the most comfortable for longer drives.

M3 or gtr. I’m going m3 in 3 years.

But get a carrera gt instead

911 if you have access to another more practical car

M3 if you don’t

GT-R combines the worst of the other two, and is soulless and ugly to boot.

I agree. But how much better is the 911 than the M3?

I’m going to go M3 in probably the next year and half. But I’m still unsure, I do love me some p-car.

Would you choose e90 m3 over Carrera?

It really depends on what -you- want out of a car. The 911 would definitely be more fun to drive on a twisty road, and it’s a surprisingly comfortable car for everyday driving, but with the M3 you get a lot more legitimate luxury and that wonderful 8400rpm V8.

Me, I would take the M3, but that’s mostly because I’ve spent plenty of time in a 997 carrera. The m3 would be more of a new thing for me.

Don’t get me wrong, I love them too. But I want to graduate into Porsche ownership

GTR. Personally, I don’t need a car for commuting in any way, shape or form so I’d flash a tune, do 200 MPH and cross that off my bucket list, then head to Spa and the Ring.

depends on what sort of 911? m3 >911. if we are talking s or gts, different ballgame.

Well, the 911 is born and bred sports car, M3 is a 3 series with a V8 and aluminum bits n bobs. I would only get the M3 if you absolutely need back seats.

Well, seeing as I would have bought an E90 M3 yesterday had someone not put a deposit on it, I think that covers for my answer.

E9x M3 is 80% unique compared with the regular 3-series, fwiw.

I’ve had my ‘08 E90 for 3 years now; feel free to ask any questions you might have. I assume you’ve read BKRM3’s review?

The one i test drove was an 08’ (any year is fine dependent on the price) Sedan in Jerez Black, 6 Speed. It was in phenomenal shape for 51K miles; mint interior and exterior. Other than that, options don’t really matter that much as a long as it has the cold weather package.

Mine is an ‘08, manual, Silverstone II over silver, and pretty much loaded. Just rolled 77k and Blackstone says my engine’s looking great. Can’t say mine is “mint” anymore, but it’s still in very good shape, and I’m hoping to keep it in the stable for the long haul (if I don’t swap it for an ‘11 ZCP - ha!). Good luck on your hunt!

Nice! How concerning has the rare rod-bearing issue been for you?

Kinja'd!!! davesaddiction @ opposite-lock.com > Biggus Dickus (RevsBro)

Kinja'd!!!0

Well, it clearly does happen to a certain percentage of these motors and the photos aren’t pretty, but I think the concern is largely overblown on the forums and the total number of failures is still a very small percentage of the total run. It would be nice to have a definitive reason for the issue at some point, but the Blackstone report is a cheap and simple way to get some peace of mind.

If I was in the market for one, I’d just make sure to buy a car with good maintenance records (hopefully with oil changes more frequent than the 15k intervals BMW recommended) and then get an oil change and send in a sample. Better to know than to worry about it!

I haven’t, link? My best friend owns a frozen red m3 and I know a little bit about the cars. Over the course of your ownership, how has maintenance been? And do you have modifications on your car?

I prefer the later style, but it is by no means a deal breaker.

Now the 2nd result when you search E90 M3 - ha! http://oppositelock.kinja.com/bmw-e90-m3-the…

I bought mine with some remaining factory warranty and caught the AC evaporator (a common problem) before that was out. I also had them replace some worn trim.

Since then, I’ve had very few issues, and nothing very expensive. The high pressure fuel sensor crapped out on me a while back, and it sounds like my fan belt will need to be replaced soon, but other than that it’s been gas, tires, oil changes ($$) and brake pads for the track (StopTech Street Performance). I’m sure I’ll have a big bill before too long for brake rotors, and eventually the clutch will need to be replaced, even though it still feels great (they changed the clutch/flywheel design for ‘09+, so if you’re going manual, that’s something to consider - makes replacing the clutch on an ‘08 more expensive). It’s by no means a cheap car to run or maintain, but I’ve not found it to be ridiculously expensive or unreliable, either. And the driving experience and track/backroad performance are fantastic...

I’ve only done a few mods: primary cat delete + BPM Stage II tune, Megan Racing exhaust, the aforementioned brack pads + higher temp fluid, shift knob from the new M5 and the black ones from BMWPedals.

Also, it seems like the issue was one of infant mortality. The engines that failed in catastrophic fashion tended to be young from what i remember reading.

Chiming in - they bother me a lot on a black or blue car, but not on white or silver.

Yet to be confirmed if true, but I hope that is what's proven to be the case. Would be great if you could say with confidence that motors over XXk miles didn't have the issue.
